What Answer Engine Optimization is
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that AI assistants and answer features, such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, can understand it and cite it when they respond to a question.
It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. The same fundamentals of crawlability, authority and genuinely useful content still apply, with extra attention to clear, quotable answers and well-marked structured data.
How AI systems choose what to cite
No one outside these companies knows the exact rules, and they change. What is observable is that answers tend to draw on pages that state a clear answer near the top, are well organized, come from sites with topical depth and are consistent with what other trusted sources say about the business.
That is why we treat AEO as a content-quality and entity-clarity exercise, not a trick. We avoid any promise that a particular AI tool will mention you.
Writing content AI can quote
Lead with a direct, self-contained answer, then add detail. Use descriptive headings that match real questions, short paragraphs, tables where comparison helps and FAQ sections that reflect the way people actually ask.
Keep facts accurate and specific. Vague marketing language gives answer engines nothing useful to extract, while concrete, verifiable statements do.
Measuring AI visibility honestly
AI visibility is harder to measure than rankings. We track a fixed set of buyer questions across the main answer engines over time, record whether and how your business is mentioned, and watch referral traffic from AI sources in analytics.
Because responses vary from run to run, we look at trends across many queries rather than any single answer.
